Something to ponder.

In the “Education” chapter I say that if you can show me a standard student, I will gladly administer a standardized test. My point is that students are people, individuals with different needs and unique perspectives. Rather than attempting to standardize education, which is really an attempt to control outcomes and standardize the products/graduates of the system, we should be encouraging and celebrating the individuality and uniqueness of students. My mom used to say that “If we all liked the same things it would be a boring world.” In his 1842 dramatic monologue “Ulysses,” Alfred, Lord Tennyson writes, “I am a part of all that I have met.” Every circumstance and interaction in life helps shape the individual. No two people have identical circumstances and interactions. Therefore, no two people will see/understand/intuit/express/react exactly the same; there is no such thing as a “standard” person.
